Sue's Poems-The Contest
The following poem was writen for the National Library of Poetry's annual contest.
The poem directly following it was NOT sent to the Library of Poetry, for obvious reasons,
and should be self explanatory.
The Poet's Lament
My creative juices are all dried up.
I knew it would happen in time.
I wrack my brain
Oh stress, Oh strain!
I just can't seem to rhyme.
My creative juices just won't flow.
Rhymes?? Can't get to know 'em.
To my dismay
They've gone astray.
I can't create a poem!
And, if verse would bring a tale alive
The rhythm should be pleasin'.
And, needs there be
A plot, you see,
To give a rhyme some reason.
My poetic license has expired!
My creative tongue is tied!
Rhyme again? I may.
But for now? Today?
I've been de-"verse"-ified.

(Entry for the National Library of Poetry Contest.)
And the Winner IS??
A poetry contest? I should enter?
Prizes? There's twenty-four grand!
You really think I got talent?
O.K! I'll try my hand.
I thought and wrote and wrote and thought
And finally found the words.
I proudly mailed my entry off,
And waited till I heard.
I WON!! I WON!! I'm a FINALIST!!
But, uh oh! There's a CATCH!
They'll publish me in this
(The plot begins to hatch!)
I sign a release, but I don't BUY...
So, I get aNUTHER letter.
I can buy a TAPE of my poem bein' READ!
I can read it BETTER!
I can have it 'scribed upon a plaque
To hang upon my wall.
Had I known my poem would cost me so
I wouldn't have rhymed at ALL!
I still don't "bite"...and months elapse...
I receive no further offer.
Did each and every contestant "win"..?
(I hate to be a scoffer.)
But I promise I won't use the words
Con....or scam....or CROOK...
If they'll just tell me,
Does ANYone win...
If they don't buy that DAMN BOOK!?
